The town is situated along the two banks of the Maritsa river enclosed between the southern slopes of the Sredna Gora Mountain and the steep northern slopes of the Rhodopes.The population of the municipality numbers 127 566 people.
It was founded under name of Tatar Pazardzhik in 1845 on the place of a previously existing sattlement. In the St.Bogoroditsa (God Mother) church is preserved the most impressive iconostatasis in Bulgaria witch was made by master artists of the Debar School.
The reduced production capacity of the industrial enterprises in recent years and their transition to the use of an ecological fuel - natural gas- have considerably improved the state of the air on the territory of the municipality. Part of the gas-conduit network in the Pazardzhik municipality has been already constructed. The ecological public transport in the municipal centre also has its contribution to air purity.
The main branches of industry in the Pazardzhik municipality are the food, beverage and tobacco industries and machinery production.Cultivable farmlands occupy the largest part of the territory of the Pazardzhik municipality, which is the most important prerequisite for the development of farming.
There are several sports halls, three stadiums, a bicycle track an open-air swimming pool and an indoor swimming pool in the town of Pazardzhik.
